Every April and November, the Department of Justice updates the state median income numbers to be used in the bankruptcy means test.

Whether your total income is low enough to automatically qualify for file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy may depend on what state you live in.

Median income varies widely from state to state, from a very high in DC and Connecticut, to very low in Mississippi, West Virginia,  and New Mexico.
