How To Sign Up for Obamacare in Idaho
For 2023 health plans, Idaho open enrollment begins on October 15, 2022 and runs through December 15, 2022. Make note of this deadline. Idaho is getting an early start on open enrollment but it's one of only two states closing open enrollment before the start of the new year.
Open enrollment has ended for 2022 plans. However, you may still be able to purchase health insurance for this year if you qualify for a special enrollment period. For example, if you’ve recently lost your job or significant income, you might qualify for a 60-day special enrollment period that will allow you to sign up for a new health insurance plan. To get covered, you can go directly to the online health insurance marketplace for Idaho. If you need personalized help, you can reach out to an enrollment assistant. Most enrollment helpers are working remotely during the COVID crisis.
Where's the Idaho Health Care Exchange?
You can find the Idaho health insurance exchange at Your Health Idaho. This is where you will learn about the specific health insurance plans available to you under Obamacare. If you see a plan you like, you'll be guided through the enrollment process online.
Getting Personalized Help with Enrollment
In Idaho, if you need help understanding your options for coverage under Obamacare or signing up for a plan, you can get assistance from a certified enrollment counselor or from a health insurance broker or agent. Both are free.
Enrollment counselors can explain your options, answer your questions, and help you apply for the plan you choose -- but they can't recommend a specific plan for you.
Find an enrollment counselor. To find a Idaho certified enrollment counselor, broker, or agent, use the Find Help page at Your Health Idaho.
Licensed health insurance agents or brokers can also help you understand your health care coverage options under Obamacare. Unlike government trained counselors, brokers and agents are allowed to suggest the best plan for you.
To directly connect with a Idaho insurance broker who can help you evaluate insurance plans and choose a plan that's appropriate for your situation, visit the YHI Agent Page at Your Health Idaho or call 800-943-6832. (We receive advertising income from the licensed brokers who offer their services through this telephone number.)

Idaho Medicaid Expansion: Do I Qualify for Medicaid Under the ACA?
The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) expanded Medicaid eligibility to include more people who couldn’t otherwise obtain health insurance. As written, the ACA would extend Medicaid to all adults with incomes at or below 138% of the federal poverty level. (For a single person in Idaho in 2021, that’s $18,754. For a family of four, it’s $38,295.)
However, the U.S. Supreme Court later ruled that it was up to individual states to decide whether to expand Medicaid. As of October 2021, 12 states have not expanded their programs.
Idaho Has Expanded Medicaid
Idaho expanded Medicaid as of January 1, 2020. The state expects almost 100,000 Idaho residents to enroll in expanded Medicaid, which now reaches adults with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level.
Idaho is attempting to implement a work requirement for Medicaid but, as of October 2021, it has not been approved.
