As a self-employed person, you're probably used to shopping for your own health insurance coverage. Under the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), that job should be easier for many. All policies must now offer essential types of coverage, and you can easily compare the costs of available policies online at your state's health insurance exchange.

Depending on your income, you may qualify for subsidies that will cut the costs of your premiums. This can get complicated, however, when you're self-employed, because your income probably fluctuates from year to year. And as your income rises, your eligibility for subsidies declines.

You'll just have to estimate your income as carefully as you can when you apply for coverage. If you underestimate it, you may end up owing money to the IRS when you file your taxes. Overestimate, and you may get money back.
