For 2022 health plans, Illinois open enrollment begins on November 1, 2021 and runs through January 15, 2022. If you enroll by December 15, your coverage will begin on January 1, 2022.
Open enrollment has ended for 2021 plans. However, you may still be able to purchase health insurance for this year if you qualify for a special enrollment period. For example, if you’ve recently lost your job or income due to the COVID-19 crisis or for any other reason, you might qualify for a 60-day special enrollment period that will allow you to sign up for a new health insurance plan. To get covered, you can go directly to the online health insurance marketplace for Illinois. If you need personalized help, you can reach out to an enrollment assistant. Most enrollment helpers are working remotely during the COVID crisis.
Where's the Illinois Health Care Exchange?
You can find the health insurance exchange for Illinois at Healthcare.gov. This is where you can learn about the various health insurance options available to you under the Affordable Care Act. If you see a plan you like, you'll be guided through the enrollment process online.
Getting Personalized Help with Enrollment
In Illinois, if you need help understanding your options for coverage under Obamacare or signing up for a plan, you can get assistance from a trained enrollment assister or from a licensed health insurance broker or agent. Both are free.
A certified enrollment assister can explain your options, answer your questions, and help you apply for the plan you choose -- but they can't recommend a specific plan for you.
To find an assister in your area, go to Find Local Help at HealthCare.gov. There, you can enter your zip code to get a list of helpers near you.
Licensed health insurance agents or brokers can also help you understand your health care coverage options under Obamacare. Unlike government-trained assisters and counselors, brokers and agents are allowed to suggest the best plan for you. Being allowed to "cut to the chase" this way can help make the process more efficient for you and take less time.
