Federal law limits the amount of employee wages an employer may garnish for certain debts, but not all debts are subject to these limits. Employees are entitled to advance notice of student loan default garnishments and back tax levies, along with certain documents for the employee to submit to address the amount and/or schedule of payment.

Many states do not have separate laws limiting wage garnishments. Federal law applies in those states. Other states limit garnishment of wages to a greater extent than the federal law. To learn the rules in your state, select it from the list below.
